The Missing Dimension: How Mirror Cabinet Projection Changes Bathroom Use

Mirror cabinets are usually compared by width, height and storage capacity. Yet one of the measurements that most affects everyday use is often overlooked: projection — how far the cabinet extends from the finished wall.

Projection changes how close the cabinet feels when someone leans over the basin, whether the forehead and shoulders remain clear, how the doors open, and whether nearby mixers or task lights create conflicts. Two cabinets can look almost identical from the front while feeling completely different in use.

The most useful view of a mirror cabinet is often not the front elevation. It is the side elevation showing the wall, cabinet, basin and user together.

Why the Front View Can Be Misleading

Product images usually show mirror cabinets from the front because this clearly presents the finish, door arrangement and overall proportions. The front view, however, compresses depth.

The cabinet is not experienced from the front alone. A person moves closer to the basin, leans forward to wash or shave, reaches into the cabinet and opens one or more doors. These actions take place in section rather than elevation.

A cabinet that appears perfectly aligned above the vanity may still project too far into the user zone. The conflict may only become obvious after installation.

Cabinet Depth and Basin Projection Work Together

Cabinet depth should never be evaluated on its own. The basin determines where the user stands and how far the upper body must move forward to reach the water comfortably.

A projecting basin places the user farther from the wall, but may also require a greater forward lean. A deep mirror cabinet then brings its lower edge closer to the forehead. The result depends on the combined geometry, not one individual measurement.

Forehead and Shoulder Clearance Are Different

The forehead is most affected by the cabinet’s lower front edge. If the cabinet is too deep or mounted too low, the user may feel crowded while leaning over the basin even without physically touching it.

The shoulders sit lower and are wider. They are more likely to conflict with an open cabinet door. This is especially relevant for double- and triple-door cabinets, where a mirrored door can swing directly into the upper-body zone.

Door Thickness Creates a Moving Projection

The cabinet body creates a fixed projection. The mirrored doors create a moving projection.

Door thickness, hinge direction and opening angle determine how far each door enters the room. A door may clear the basin but strike a side wall, tall mixer or task light.

  • Open every door to its full intended angle.
  • Check the door edge against side walls and light fittings.
  • Confirm the user can reach shelves without stepping away awkwardly.
  • Check whether two doors can be used at the same time.

Surface-Mounted or Recessed?

A surface-mounted cabinet places nearly all of its depth in front of the wall. It is often simpler to retrofit, but its projection remains fully visible.

A recessed cabinet places part of the cabinet body inside the wall, reducing visible depth and improving clearance. The wall cavity, however, is not automatically available space.

Framing, bracing, plumbing, electrical cables and insulation may occupy the same cavity. Recessing also requires a suitable cut-out and a planned finishing detail around the cabinet.

BEFORE RECESSING

Confirm the required cut-out, recess depth, framing allowance, wall services, electrical entry point and method of future removal before the wall is closed.

Mixer and Task-Light Conflicts

Vertical clearance above the mixer is only part of the check. A projecting cabinet can make a tall mixer feel crowded even when the cabinet does not physically touch it.

Confirm the mixer’s overall height, handle movement and cleaning space around the base. For wall-mounted mixers, coordinate the set-out before wall finishes are completed.

Lighting also needs to be tested with cabinet doors open. Side lights may be struck or blocked by the doors, while a light mounted too close above the cabinet may create glare or restrict door movement.

A Compact Selection Process

  1. Measure the basin and cabinet projection from the finished wall.
  2. Draw a side elevation showing the vanity, basin, mixer and cabinet.
  3. Test user lean at the basin with the cabinet outline marked on the wall.
  4. Open every door and check the moving edge against the user and nearby fittings.
  5. Inspect the wall cavity before choosing a recessed installation.
  6. Coordinate task lighting and power before drilling or closing the wall.
